[19.08] Maria
Olaru selling her car
Maria
Olaru, member of the Sydney 2000 Romanian Gymnastics
Olympic team, is looking for a buyer for her car.
Maria
Olaru's car, the one which she have received as a
gift after Sydney success, was seen on sale, in the largest
trade fair in Bucharest. The price requested was Euros 5800
(like $6500), according to the Romanian all-sport channel
Telesport.
After the Olympics, all medallist have received,
beside some cash prizes, cars. The model was a compact Ford,
blue color and with some inscriptions on driver door:the Olympics
rings, the name of the champion and the mention that is a
prize from Olympic committee.
Some of the lucky winners don't like the
model and have choused to trade for cash, other winners didn't
have the age to drive (in Romania you need to be 18 years
old to get the permit). Others from the Olympics said these
cars bring too much attention because of the model (which
was not sold for local market) and because of the Olympics
designs and inscriptions on them, which made them an easy
target for local car thieves.
Such a car, property of famous Romanian
athlete Gabriela Szabo, was very close-checked at the French-Spanish
border two years ago. Her owner, Gabi Szabo, was under a training
program in Spain. One of her sparing-partners and some close
friends were coming from Romania with her car. Inside it,
custom officials have found some banned substances and the
athlete from the car said it was for her use, not for the
high profile Gabi Szabo. Few months later, being under close
watch after this incident, Szabo have started to say she is
"too tired from too many competitions" and finally retired
from contests earlier this year, after many unexpected failures
in international competitions.
