[Oct 17] Powerful tornado in Deva
A powerful tornado have hit Deva city, home of the Olympic
team, earlier this afternoon. Fortunately, the team leaders
Catalina Ponor and Monica Rosu, along with Belu & Bitang,
are in Bucharest, (the less-powerful storm will arrive there
too, next hours) where they can reach easier the competitions
(than traveling back and forth from Deva, 400 miles away and
bad train connections).
Usually, Sunday is the day off, at least in the afternoons,
back in Deva, but the bad-looking heather have prevented girls
to go out for a ride in the town, as they did usually. They
have to choose to stay at their hotel inside Deva Gymnastics
school. Less than a mile away, a whole, 120 meters long roof
of a block was simply taken away and landed on a car parking,
destroying tens of cars. The girls didn't ;t even notice much
of the noise which scared many Deva city people, because the
sound level of music in the hotel (in absence of B&B)
was pretty close -or maybe more- than of the F3 tornado...
The tornado have lasted more than half an
hour and the floating roofs floating around, along with powerful
noise make a lot of people feel like the End of world is pretty
close. Romanian TV station aired some short news with destroyed
cars and few damaged buildings.
Tornados are very rare in Romania and almost a new phenomenon,
starting back in 90's. During a powerful tornado in 2002,
at Facaeni (100 miles East from Bucharest), a whole village
was destroyed, tens of victims many scary moments for a lot
of Romanian which saw for the first time something they used
to see only in US movies.
This afternoon tornado have hit Deva very strong, but the
cement strong blocks, which prevails in the city, have resisted
well. Except the new builded, pyramidal type (wood and tiles)
roofs, erected past few years on tops of old blocks, to prevent
the very common drainage problems of rain waters at such buildings.
