Ode
to America
Cornel Nistorescu
"The Event of the Day"/ Evenimentul Zilei
( romanian newspaper)
Sunday, 23 September 2001
Why
are Americans so united? They don't resemble one another even
if you paint them! They speak all the languages of the world
and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations. Some of
them are nearly extinct, others are incompatible with one
another, and in matters of religious beliefs, not even God
can count how many they are. Still, the American tragedy turned
three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart.
Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the army, the secret
services that they are only a bunch of losers. Nobody rushed
to empty their bank accounts. Nobody rushed on the streets
nearby to gape about. The Americans volunteered to donate
blood and to give a helping hand. After the first moments
of panic, they raised the flag on the smoking ruins, putting
on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colours of the national
flag. They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in every
place and on every car a minister or the president was passing.
On every occasion they started singing their traditional song:
"God Bless America!".
[...]
What on earth can unite the Americans in such a way? Their
land? Their galloping history? Their economic power? Money?
I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring
phrases which risk of sounding like commonplaces. I thought
things over, but I reached only one conclusion. Only freedom
can work such miracles!

A
Romanian newspaper ran a stirring pro-American editorial.

The article was used, back then, by Associated Press and
re-printed by thousands of U.S. newspapers. Most interesting-
the U.S. Army have printed and distributed it among their
soldiers.
...In September 2001, Romania have voluntarily
offered unconditional support to U.S. forces (for example,
their air planes could use the Romanian space for their night
missions, flying to Afghanistan).
There were no requests for favors, from Romania, in exchange
for this, comparing with Turkey (a long time NATO member)
which have had requested and received ok for 6 billions dollars
aid in exchange for U.S. Air Force passages and finally denied
permission. Same story with France, after a long history of
U.S. help (Marshall Plan after WW2) which have backed Saddam
regime in their past months (but later we understand why,
30% of Sadam oil money went to France for goods bought from
there, and all oil money of Iraqi regime went through a French
bank all those year).
Romanian Forces fight since then, supporting U.S.troops, in
their was against terrorism, both in Afghanistan and Iraq.
First Romanian soldiers have died in Afghanistan earlier this
year. This was, in a way, against all Romanian national traditions,
their army never fight outside the country without being first
attacked directly.
Thousands of young Romanian democrats have died and tens of
thousands imprisoned after WW, when they have fight against
communist which have taken the country (with former Soviet
bakup). Many people from Romania have had much hopes (and
were encouraged to think this, there were fights in the mountains
among regime and Resistance, until '60's) that U.S. will save
the country and Eastern Europe from communism. It didn't, the
agreement with Soviet Union was made back in 1944, that Eastern
Europe will stay under Soviet Union influence. Very sad that
Bush is not the first idiot president in U.S. history; because
of their wrong decisions, millions of innocent people have
died in Eastern Europe and people still suffer there from
poverty after the disaster left by communism regimes.
Romania have finally become an official member
of N.A.T.O., last year.
