31] Former
gymnastics star Andreea Raducan claims back Sydney medal
Romanian gymnast Andreea
Raducan has requested the International Olympic Committee
to give her back the medal she won at the Sydney Olympics
in 2000.
Andreea
Raducan had her medal withdrawn because she was found
to have used a then-illegal substance, pseudoephedrine, an
ingredient of a simple cold pill. The substance was since
removed from the list of drugs banned in sporting events.
The Romanian Sports Olympics Committee is currently
considering how to support Andreea
Raducan’s attempt to get back the Olympic title she
was stripped of in Sydney, years after the World Anti-doping
Agency removed the substance from the banned list.
Andreea
Raducan’s case sparked consternation in Romania at
the time as she and two other Romanians took all three medals
in individual contests in Sydney. She was welcomed by crowds
and the then-President Emil Constantinescu on her return to
Bucharest. But Romania’s challenge of the IOC decision, considering
that the team doctor gave her the pill for a simple cold,
was met with total resistance.
romanian-gymnastics.com: ...It's not going to
happen (unfortunately?...);
the rules were changed after that and you can not reverse
a decision taken based on previous rule;
we heard (too) many versions regarding the cold-flu...circumstances
or whatever;
Andreea
Raducan seems to be now a very nice person, a honest
person now but when you are a young girl under a 24/7/365
camp with terror-and-abuses, on a brainwashed program, situation
may be little different;
if something could be done, it was back then (by
the ROC), in the Sport Court-but strange again, they didn't
follow up the case very strong back then;
years later, former ROC President said in a TV interview
that the returned sample was containing 100 ml, despite the
fact they had send only...65 ml (!?);
...It looks like the story has come up again (through
one of their friendly tabloids) from a lady which use to yellow
at gymnasts and call them "vaci medaliate"; once
more, her own interest and bad ideas can bring troubles to
Romanian gymnastics; she want to show to people -and to Andreea-
that she is doing something for Andreea but I'm afraid it's
not very clever to upset CIO again-last time they had reacted
by not accepting a Romanian candidate in their Board; I'm
sure they may know more than can be said in the media...;
it's not in the interest of Romanian gymnastics to
stir troubles around this case: speaking about that medal
and that time, a lot of things can be disputed and rather
then returning to Andreea a medal, CIO may ask one day for
some medals...back, too(!).
To cut a long story short, Andreea
Raducan has become an Olympic Legend
because of that *injustice* made to her; the level of sympathy
she got from gymnastics fans over the World back then and
since then....is far beyond any benefit she could get from
the actual "deserved" medal; let's leave it that
way.
