wins Sportsman of Year Award; Nadia Comaneci glowed

Tennis star Roger Federer won his straight Laureus sportsman
of the Year award for the third year in a row in Barcelona
overnight.
Romanian gymnastics star Nadia
Comaneci glowed once more as a member of Laureus World
Sports Academy: her appearance in a blue dress was sensational.

A 42-member panel of the Laureus World
Sports Academy picked Federer for the top honour over a group
of finalists that included golfer Tiger Woods and former Formula
One champion Michael Schumacher.
Federer, the world's top-ranked tennis
player, won three grand slams last year and added
the Australian Open in january for his 10th career major championship.

The 25-year-old Swiss became the first sportsman
to receive the award on three occasions, making off with it
once again for his continued domination of men's tennis in
2006.
Russia's record-breaking pole vaulter Yelena
Isinbayeva was named sportswoman of the year, and Italy won
the world team of the year award after its World Cup triumph
in Germany.
Tennis was the big winner at the awards
ceremony with American Serena Williams taking the comeback
of the year award and the breakthrough prize going to fellow
tennis player Amelie Mauresmo of France following her first
two grand slam titles.
Other winners included German skier Martin
Braxenthaler for sportsperson of the year with a disability
and Kelly Slater of the United States for action sportsperson
of the year.
Barcelona Football Club were given the
Spirit of Sport award for their support of UNICEF and former
Germany captain Franz Beckenbauer took the lifetime achievement
award. Beckenbauer won the World Cup as a player and a coach,
and was the president of Germany's World Cup Organising Committee.
German mono-skier Martin Braxenthaler took the
award for the sportsperson with a disability after winning
gold medals in three of the four Alpine skiing disciplines
at the Paralympic Winter Games in Turin.
