General Interest
Lavinia began gymnastics in 1975 at the famous Onesti Gymnastics School (today the Nadia Comaneci School). Her coaches were Maria Cosa and Mihai Agoston. Together with teammate Ecaterina Szabo, they were the stars of the Los Angeles gymnasts' generation!
Sadly, Lavinia Agache had to retire in 1985 following a knee injury at the 1985 World University Games. She was 19. She appeared in the 1991 World Professional Championships & decided to stay in the USA following the performance. On March 5, 1995 she married Tom Carney in Boca Raton, Florida, where she had been coaching. A few years later the couple moved to California where they now coach in Bakersfield.
Tom and Lavinia eventually moved back to Florida, and to a life of much commuting. Lavinia began coaching Orlando Metro Gymnastics while Tom worked as an officer in the Boca Raton police department. Lavinia now coaches at Everglades Gymnastics in Davie, Florida. Tom has high praise for his wife, "America should use her more with their gymnastics, she is a real student of the game."
