[May 18] Romanian
gymnastics: a (very) low profile at Paris World Cup
No girls from Romanian gymnastics
team, at Paris World Cup event. Ponor was supposed to go,
but she complain about some small back pains. Coaches and
RGF choose to have her training for Euros, rather than pushing
things for the Paris contest. Since this it was the last contest
before Euros, it may be possible of seeing only Ponor at Euros,
or maybe not seeing any girl at all.
Only Urzica Marius,
Dragulescu Marian,
Suciu Ioan, and Popescu
Daniel will compete for Romania. "The final team
for Euros will be decided one week before Euros, during a
Bucharest trial", said Dan Grecu, who still keep the
"cold distance" from the "bad guys" on
his list: team "veterans" Dragulescu
and Marius Urzica.
Lack of (good) communication seems to be still a problem for
coach Grecu, a former top gymnast and a good coach, but still
formed at the (not so good) old communist school of "hard
rulers"coaches, dictators-alike. Time changes, but for
some people is too late to change themselves, it's the human
nature (and the whole Romanian picture past 15 years). The
"Karoly miracle"of changing from an abusive dictator
to an (almost) a human being was possible only because he
was forced to do so in US, no other options left for him beck
then.
By the way, Dragulescu get a severe warning after his Ploiesti
night adventures.
The funniest thing: RGF
President Vieru himself told to the press that he have
found Dragulescu, (Sunday afternoon after the competition
was over), still hanging out in the city, rather than going
back to Bucharest. Two days later, during a (secret-but not
for us, of course, we have our good sources-) RGF meeting,
Dragulescu was told that at his first mistake he is out of
the team.
Dan
Grecu is willing, anyway, to bring new boys on the
team, for the Beijing Olympics, and keeping "the old
guys" in the team, which don't have much hopes to make
all the way to next Olympics but still makes troubles with
indiscipline, gave Grecu
a good excuse to dump them at first next scandal.
Dragulescu have
denied at that RGF meeting that he went back to the hotel
at 3 o'clock in the morning, as we wrote (and Romanian newspapers
wrote this after us, too); he said that it was "only"
2, 30 or something in the morning. Maybe he was right, we
have edited so heavily that article, trying to avoid any suppositions
regarding the back seats of a car, that a small mistake could
be possible. But the previous video footage with a top gymnast
dancing (with no shirt) in a bar, keeping a hand on the bar
girl's bar is nice, too- and we saw it. Not a good attitude
for a top gymnast, in the poorest European country, who spend
(and pay to them) a lot of money for them to train and get
results, not to have fun and landing on their ass; yeah, you
can be overscored once in Athens, but this can't happen all
the time.
More discipline needed at the men's team, but it looks like
Dan
Grecu can't control much these things any more- he didn't
manage to control the junior team who bring BIG troubles to
the girls team, too (and asking under age girls to go out
for a drink, in the middle of the night, leaving with no excuse
the official camp-looks like a big mistake in every step mentioned).
None of the (night adventurous) boys were punished for this,
as they should be.
