[Feb 13] Andreea Raducan speaks about her life after gymnastics

Former Romanian gymnast Andreea Raducan has spoken about her life after gymnastics, during a TV lifestyle program (available on web, click here).
"After I quit gymnastics, I become overweight and I didn't followed any special diet, fitness program or something like that", says Andreea Raducan. "I think that after a while, my body has come back in shape-1 year and a half after ending my gym career- whithout doing much efforts. At this moment, I don't think I need to use any diet program, I feel good as I am. I do exercise to maintain a good tonus for the body and

Andreea's name will remain in the Olympic and Gymnastics history as "the apple of discord" after having been stripped of her gold medal in the All-around in Sydney 2000. She was found to have taken two pills for a cold, which, unknown to her, contained the banned stimulant pseudoephedrine. However, the Olympic Gold medal that Andreea won as a member of the Romanian Team and her Silver medal on Vault were left to her. Andreea's star rose at the 1999 World Championships in Tianjin, where she won the title on floor and helped the Romanian team into the victory. This was in fact her first competition as a senior. Her World medal tally grew with three Gold medals (Team, Beam and Floor) and two Bronze medals (AA and Vault) at the 2001 World Championships in Ghent.

At the 2002 Worlds Championships in Debrecen (20th to 24th of November), she announced that she will retire and the World Cup Final in Stuttgart (30th of November - 1st December), will be the last competition in her career!

**********
Andrea is the proud Gold Medal winner in the Team competition and bronze medallist on Vault at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games! She will be also remembered as the victim of a disqualification!

On September 26, 2000, the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique has been informed of the positive test of Andrea Raducan after the Women's All Around Competition and the IOC decision to disqualify the gymnast, strip her of the gold medal and adjust the official results of the competition.

At a meeting held Sept. 26, 2000, the FIG Executive Committee decided unanimously not to impose any further sanctions on Andrea Raducan. It was felt that the removal of the medal was punishment enough for an athlete who was innocent in this situation.

The FIG Executive Committee supported the sanctions applied by the IOC and has also decided to sanction the doctor involved, Oana Ioachim. He was excluded from participating at any international gymnastics events of the Continental Unions or the FIG for the next four years, including the Olympic Games 2004!

In December 2000 at the World Cup Final in Glasgow (GBR), Andrea won the Gold on Floor and Beam and the Bronze on Uneven Bars! At the press conference, she thanked the FIG for its behaviour in Sydney and for its support which allows her not to give up, but to compete again.
