[Dec 7] Increased
bonuses for Romanian gymnastics
The Romanian Olympic Committee (ROC) has
announced that it has increased the monthly bonuses offered
to the coaches and to the top gymnasts from the Romanian gymnastics
Olympic Team.
The exact figures were not disclosed,
we can make estimations. Last year, former coaches Octavian
Belu and Mariana
Bitang received, each one, $6,000 monthly (like €
5000). The other former coaches and top gymnasts from WAG
Olympic team got (all of them) like $3,000. A total of $15,000.
This year, even after this increase, ROC
did not spend more than $ 6,000 for ALL the coaches and the
top girls (Sandra
Izbasa and Steliana
Nistor only receive a monthly bonus of few hundre$;
the other members of the team got their basic bonus for training
at the Olympic Team).
Romanian media has reported about a $30,000
annual income for the coach of the handball team (which get
only 2nd place at WC, so far). This is more than twice (what
we presume to be) the income of the gym team.
ROC does expect same (good) result (Gold
for the WAG team) at Beijing, but it looks like they spend
only 30% from what they did for previous team coaches. This
"generous offer" come after a looong year and half
when the main coach got only few hundred$$ -maybe just to
convince him to leave?...Not to mention that all the other
coaches from Deva worked since Jan 2005 for their club (miserable)
salary only. It looks to me that almost two years, the ROC
was in a "Cold War" with the new Staff of the Romanian
gymnastics team. Glad it (almost) ended.
