[Jan 30] The
Don King of gymnastics: Bela Karolyi
San Jose Mercury News - San Jose,CA,USA
Bela
Karolyi did interviews with just about every media
outlet in the Bay Area because nobody does it better. He sounded
like a revival preacher talking about Mary Lou Retton
- thousands of times he has done this speech, and still with
the gesticulating!
"These coming up championships are going to
have the biggest surprises anyone has ever seen'' he promised.
Why? Because the juniors we've never heard of "are
gonna come in with the HUNGER! and the desire and the performance.''
He called the current champions "goddesses'' and the
pending battle a ``dogfight.'' With two-time
national champion Nastia Liukin six feet away, he said,
"We want to see because we are bad guys and we
want to see the queen dying.'' He's Don King, only
the hair flows wildly from his lip and not the top of his
head.

break away from Earth's gravity
Daily Press - Newport News,VA,USA
Strange shapes and cosmic landscapes inhabit
"Lunar Sea," the evening-long work by the Momix dance company
onstage tonight and Thursday at The American Theatre. Pendleton,
who founded the company in the early 1980s, uses an old theatrical
device - phosphorescent paint illuminated by black light -
to fashion his lunar world.
In the late 1990s, Pendleton teamed with choreographers
Daniel Ezralow and David Parsons to create Aeros, a
European light show that featured the movements of members
of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation in a theatrical setting.

Talk about big shoes to fill. If its name

consider the small, Los Angeles-based company's goal of becoming
a 21st century version of Roone Arledge's revered "Wide World

10,000 subscribers, who pay $4.95 per month or $49.95 per

The country's biggest charity gymnastics tournament
made its annual stop in Peoria this weekend. More than 2,800
participants from 7 states took part. It was all to raise
money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Organizers
say they hope to raise about $80,000 this year.
They say it's for an important cause - one important
enough for an Olympic gold medalist to show up. "I think it's
so awesome that all the proceeds go to St. Jude and everything,
so i was really excited to be here to help so many kids,”
said U.S. Olympic gold medalist Carly Patterson.
[Jan 12] District
may eliminate ski, gymnastics teams
The Casper Star Tribune - Casper,WY,USA
Students, parents and coaches involved in the
Natrona County School District's alpine skiing and gymnastics
teams are crying foul over the possible elimination of the
programs and developing a game plan to try to save them.
A number of factors went into the decision including
low participation, the trouble finding coaches and cost. Dvorak
said the school board doesn't necessarily have to act on the
recommendation because it's not policy. However, the board
can chose to act if it desires. The problem isn't just in
Casper.

Big Stretch
Toronto Town Crier Newspapers - Toronto,Ontario,Canada
Pilates is so passé — take it up a notch
with Gyrotonic. Blending principles from yoga, gymnastics,
swimming, dance and Tai Chi, Gyrotonic
was created by a Romanian ballet dancer, and uses a
wooden jungle gym apparatus of wheels, weights, pulleys, harnesses
and a bench designed to increase mobility, strength and agility.
“It’s the next level up from Pilates,” says
Vivian Nickels of Body Matrix in downtown Toronto, one of
two certified Gyrotonic studios in the city. “It’s faster,
more rhythmical and it challenges the whole body from beginning
to end.”

after The Rose Parade with Nadia Comaneci

The
Rose Parade tradition continued this year and we had several
guests in for the actual parade.Unfortunately, this was probably
the worst parade I have seen in a long time, if not ever.
The floats were just not that spectacular (this is the consensus
of most of the usual parade attendees).
One of the Oklahoma floats had James Garner,
Johnny Bench, Shannon Miller and Nadia
Comaneci. I didn't recognize any of these people.
What an odd group to be on the same float. I mean we KNOW
Nadia
Comaneci wasn't from Oklahoma (I have no idea on the
others) so why was she on this float? It wasn't a sports float
or a Rockford Files float. Bizarre, I guess these are the
only people Oklahoma could pay off to represent them.
